Yet another illustration by the wonderful Gustave Doré. This is an image from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which I’ve read at least a dozen times and written too many papers on to count - and yet, I still love it.
This is Plate 11, titled “The Death-Fires Danced at Night,” from Doré’s illustrations of the 1867 edition to the aforementioned poem. The title is based on these lines: “About, about, in reel and rout / The death-fires danced at night.”
I’ve just stumbled upon a website with loads of Doré illustrations. Looks like my afternoon and evening is gone.
